This news couldn’t come at a better time! Rumours suggest that Motorola were soak testing Android 5.0 Lollipop on their brand new flagship model Moto X. Why is it good timing? Because we have our Moto X 2nd generation review unit in.
Moto X close to getting Android 5.0 Lollipop?
For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a soak test is where they put the phone in a bucket of water to see if the new software is affected. No, we’re just kidding! It’s where they ask volunteers to have a release of the software to make sure it works “In the wild”. It turns out one such lucky user may have bought a phone which had been selected for soak testing.
The user in question brought his phone second-hand off Swappa, and suddenly got a software update. It so happens that it was Android 5.0 Lollipop. It’s believed that the previous owner of the phone (seriously? Who’s selling their Moto X already?) may have opted in for soak testing.
The big confusion happened because Motorola didn’t release any details about the soak test or release notes on their usual forums, so it some people got excited this was the actual OTA update for the Moto X. Since this reveal happened, it has been confirmed (or rather, denied) that this isn’t the OTA roll out of Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Moto X, but more likely just a lucky user getting a device which had been pre-opted for soak testing. Let’s face it, it would have been a massive surprise to see the Moto X get the official update ahead of any of the Nexus devices.
That being said, however, it’s clear that Motorola are keen and ready to roll this update ASAP after the launch. With rumours that the Nexus OTA roll out will happen on November 12, we wonder how long after that Motorola will hold off before pushing the update to their phones. A day? Two? We sure hope it’s before we have to send our test unit back so that we can have a hands on try with Lollipop and review it as soon as it comes out.
Meanwhile, we’ll be playing with our review device and hoping that we get Android 5.0 Lollipop while we still have the device to test. Look out for our video unboxing and presentation of the device on our YouTube channel and the full written review coming soon.
