You may not know the name Giovanni Calabrese, unless you’re an art buff, but this is the guy who creates all the statues of Android for Google, and he may have just hinted at what the next version of Android (believed to be Android 5.0 and would start with an L) would be called in a post on Google+. Could it be called Android 5 Licorice?
Android 5 Licorice?
I never had a great liking for Licorice, but damn! there are some great flavors out there!!!
Could this be the post that hints at the name of the next Android OS? Giovanni Calabrese is an artist. More specifically, he is a sculptor. He’s been sculpting all the statues of Android for Google for years. What statues? The same ones as the one in the picture above, the most recent statue for Android 4.4 Kit Kat. As you can see, Google’s lawn is now covered in statues of their Android logo going all the way back to Android 2.0 Eclair.
So, could we be looking at getting Android 5 Licorice? It’s, quite honestly, difficult to tell. Either Calabrese just posted a cheeky hint at what he’s working on, or… Well, he was genuinely surprised by the range of flavours of licorice. But why would he post this? Well, people do post some random things on Social Networks such as Google+. But that’s the more cynical view of this post, but you could also argue that this is a genuine hint or it is intended to mislead people.
If you continue to read the comments, Calabrese doesn’t comment much more, other to say that he was ‘eating’ green licorice, which arguably could be said to add weight to claim that this is a hint. So far, all rumours have led us to believe that the next version of Android OS would be called Lollipop. But then again, we were “sure” that this version would be called Key Lime Pie too, so the lesson of this post? Don’t listen too hard to rumour.
Will Android 5 Licorice come to light soon? We’ll have to wait and see. What do you think is more likely? Leave a note in the comments, or vote in the poll.
