With only 8 days to go till the big day, it appears the geeks at Google have got into the festive mood by adding an Easter egg (or should that be Christmas present?) to their mobile search app as you can now sing carols with Google Now
If you use the Google Search app – either via Google Now, via the app itself – and either type or say “Let’s go caroling”, you not only get the usual search results (which will now pull up lots of similar reviews as this), but you are also offered a list of five songs: Jingle Bells, Up on the House Top, Deck the Halls, O Christmas Tree, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
Pressing on one of the song titles will show you some play and pause buttons. Pressing play (with your volume turned up) will start the music, and you’re prompted to follow along as the lyrics are highlighted karaoke-style for you to sing along to.
I don’t know how long this will last, or if it will have different songs each day (I, for one, hope it does) or if they will extend this into the New Year (Ol’ Lang Syne anyone?), so try it the first chance you get. It might be just the thing to lighten the mood in the office on a cold winter day.
There are also reports it works on the iOS Google Search App. Sadly, it won’t work on the desktop, even using Google’s own Chrome browser, but hats off to the developers for adding this anyway.
Just another fun feature to play with in those lonely hours this afternoon.
Are you in a non-English country? Does it have local carols in your language or does it show you the titles above? It would be interesting to hear if this is world-wide and localised to each country or just ‘limited’ to the five songs above.
