November 20th brings first true octa-core mobile processor

After witnessing MediaTek announce they had developed a true octa-core mobile processor back in July, we were eager to find out when exactly it would be available, and luckily for us yesterday they announced it would be landing November 20th.

With a not so catchy name of the “MT6592” the chip promises to contain true 8 core technology, in contrast to Samsung’s Exynos 5 octa which although ┬ápossessing 8 cores, can only actually utilize four at one time. It does this by using big.LITTLE technology which has 4 very powerful Cortex-A15 cores and four not so powerful Cortex-A7 cores, meaning unlike the MediaTek processor, it can only access half of the 8 cores at any one time.

MediaTek says that because of the MT6592’s ability to intelligently activate all 8 cores simultaneously, it will greatly enhance performance and power efficiently. This is particularly useful for allowing the user to multitask without significantly reducing battery life, although how true this claim is we’ll have to wait and see when this is out in the wild.
