You’ve seen us cover the rollout of 4G over the UK over the last year or so. EE was first, and undisputed leaders until last week, when O2 and Vodafone launched their 4G services. So far, the only major network missing was Three. Now, however, it appears that come December, there will be a Three UK 4G network, as hinted in a tweet to a frustrated customer on Twitter earlier today.
Twitter user Jeremy (@eatdatcake) asked Three UK (@ThreeUK) when they were going to launch their own 4G network. About an hour later, Three answered saying:
We’ll be launching 4G in London, Manchester and Birmingham in Q4 13, 50 cities to follow by end of 2014…
Following the link takes you to a page on Three’s site where they give very scant details about when and where Three UK 4G will be rolling out. No exact match is stated, just “December 2013” as being the launch in London, Manchester and Birmingham (as stipulated in the tweet above) with 50 cities within the year and 98% of the population by the end of 2015. It must be said, this will be significantly behind all the other networks such as EE, O2 and Vodafone, but at least they will be joining the… Race (?)
The Three page doesn’t give much detail about prices or plans, yet, but it does give interesting news for customers currently with a 4G ready phone:
We think everyone should enjoy the wonders of 4G, with no catches. So when we start rolling out 4G, we’ll nudge up our customers who have a 4G Ready device at no extra cost. No hefty price tag. No extra charges. No expensive new phones or contracts. And no fuss. Great news.
This would seem to suggest that Three will not be launching any 4G specific tariffs, unlike most carriers, or that at least current customers won’t have to get a new tariff. as for “4G ready device”, this is the list of Three’s current selection of 4G ready phones:
- Samsung Galaxy S4
- Nokia Lumia 925
- HTC One
- Sony Xperia Z
- Apple iPhone 5
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
- Samsung Galaxy Mega
- Sony Xperia SP
- Huawei Ascend P2
- Blackberry Q10
- Blackberry Z10
- Nokia Lumia 920
- Galaxy Note 2 Ultrafast
It should be interesting to see if Three will launch any Three UK 4G price plans for new customers, or if this deal will also extend to anyone wanting to have Three’s 4G coverage.
