Its been busy doing rounds on the internet,Chromecast is here to stay, but during Google’s announcement, they stated that it runs a stripped down version of chrome Os.Well, a hacker group called GTV hacker team has found that it actually runs on android, and not chrome OS as stated otherwise.Or as others have called it, a modified Google TV release. So the GTV crew identified the Chromecast runs a modified version of Google TV.
If you don’t know what the Chromecast is,Chromecast is a device created by Google that helps stream content to your TV by simply plugging it in. It’s as easy as that,YouTube videos, content from the net can all via the Chromecast get streamed to your TV set. Its pretty efficient and cheap,Google’s device is just $35.GTV Hacker crew had this to say on its blog.
No, it’s not. We had a lot of internal discussion on this, and have concluded that it’s more Android than ChromeOS. To be specific, it’s actually a modified Google TV release, but with all of the Bionic / Dalvik stripped out and replaced with a single binary for Chromecast. Since the Marvell DE3005 SOC running this is a single core variant of the 88DE3100, most of the Google TV code was reused. So, although it’s not going to let you install an APK or anything, its origins: the bootloader, kernel, init scripts, binaries, are all from the Google TV.
As with many android folk who like to tinker with their toys, its possible to root your Chromecast, yes its dangerous and will probably void you of any warranty and services in the future,as for now you wont be able to install anything.Although thanks to the same hackers we know that some apps are on their way, chrome specific apps such as Pandora, Washington Post, AOL ON, Qello, Revision 3.So you might want to hold onto your horses, not just yet,but if you would like to try rooting it for yourself, follow this link.
