Chip maker Qualcomm made announcements today regarding its snapdragon family of processors. A hard-hitting announcement it was too. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 family is getting a brand new processor, featuring quad-core CPUs with integrated multi-mode 3G/4G LTE. The new processor also integrates key modem features that are important to China and other emerging regions, including TD-SCDMA, HSPA+ (up to 42Mbps), and multi-SIM capabilities. The name of this processor is the MSM8926.
You have to realize that it’s becoming a pretty big deal for chip makers to have integrated 4G LTE chips. ARM,Mediatek, have all introduced new chips to take advantage of this, and Qualcomm doesn’t want to be left behind either. The 8926 Snapdragon 400 processor is expected to be available starting in late 2013 and will be compatible with both windows and android phones.Although 4G isn’t available in many parts of the world right now,Qualcomm hopes to prepare such regions with reasonably priced processors which will provide top-notch service.
According to Qualcomm the newest Snapdragon 400 processor will continue to support multi-SIM capabilities of Dual SIM, Dual Standby and Dual SIM, Dual Active and is optimized to deliver a smooth, graphics-rich gaming experience. The platform also supports a rich set of wireless connectivity functionality including integrated Qualcomm VIVE™ 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM and NFC.
In addition to all this,Qualcomm will introduce the QRD (Qualcomm Reference design system) The QRD is supposed to help design manufacturers with comprehensive handset development platforms and access to third-party providers of tested and verified hardware and software components. Hence device manufacturers will be able to deliver differentiated smart-phones to budget-conscious consumers. You can check out Qualcomm’s full announcement here.
