Japan-based component makers mainly Sharp and Panasonic have been recently developing 6 inch ultra thin high-end panels mostly for use in large screen smartphones. The smartphones equipped with the panels are expected to be revealed and launched in the third quarter (Q3) 2013. This is according to Taiwan-based component makers.
Samsung, you may recall, was the first to launch what is termed today as a phablet, the Galaxy Note. The Galaxy Note has a 5.3 inch screen with a screen resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels. The Galaxy Note was preceded by the Galaxy Note 2 which has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. Samsung successfully created a niche in the market with its Galaxy Note series recording sales of nearly 8 million units in 2012. Hence you can see why tech giants such as Acer want in as well. Acer expects global sales of large screen smartphones in 2013 to surpass the 10 million unit mark, with sales from 399 dollars to 499 dollars.
Apple has dominated the global market for 9.7 inch tablets. The iPad series. That is excluding the iPad mini which has a 7.9 inch screen. So yes, expect 6 inch devices soon. Remember that Nokia 3310 that you used to play Space impact on? Not so big now is it? :)
