Before this ruling Apple had successfully filed an injunction against the Galaxy Nexus using a patent on Universal Search on a mobile device. The Court of Appeals overturned it on grounds that the original court had “abused its discretion” because Apple did not show evidence that consumer demand for the Galaxy Nexus was heavily relevant on this feature.
This doesn’t really have any huge or long term effects considering the new Nexus’s are coming soon except maybe setting precedent for other cases. While a victory for Android, this is just another skirmish in the seemingly unending patent wars, consumers lose while lawyers win big. The only thing this case makes clear is the desperate need for technology patent reforms. Post your thoughts on this case and the patent war in the comments!
