The only screen size that is missing from HTC’s portfolio is a 5″ Android device, but other than that the Taiwanese OEM has them all. According to DigiTimes unknown source, HTC will step into the extra-large mobile device segment by launching in September or October its first 5-inch flagship Android smartphone featuring a never before heard screen resolution of 1794 x 1080 pixels.
The company that fathered the development of 5″ handsets, also has plans for an even larger device, a 5.5″ GALAXY Note phablet which will launch at the end of this month. The unbelievable success brought by the 5.3″ hybrid among customers have attracted other Asian OEM’s to venture into this segment.
LG also stepped into the 5″ segment by launching the Optimus Vu in the first quarter of 2012, followed by a less known to the rest of the world, South Korean vendor called Pantech already launched its second 5″ model this summer, the Vega S5, which today is the third biggest OEM in South Korea and one of the new vendors that made a pretty good impact on the US market this year.
HTC will have to deliver a top-notch handset to at least level with Samsung’s 5.3 GALAXY Note success, otherwise it will only become another disappointing fail like HTC tablet segment is today. I’d like to hear some thoughts on this rumored 5″ smartphone. What do you think?
