Tablet market flourishing in South East Asia according to GfK Research

SEA is emerging as a huge market for tablet sales with a combined value of $1 billion in 2011. Tablet market in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam is said to constitute almost  $962 million of the market. Research firm GfK survey that about five of the six of these places were showing steady improvement in sales as demand doubled in the last quarter. Malaysia remained the largest market in the area witb a total revenue of $374 million. Android is the most popular tablet OS in the area with the Google-owned OS constituting to 2/3rd of the market shares.

GfK Asia account director stated that tablets which started off at a slow rate at the start of the year have picked up in this part of the world. He attributed that the Malaysian tablet sales were surged by increased marketing and distribution efforts. He also added that the average price of the Android tablet was $531 in 2011 with other OS tablets priced at $676.
