Android Gmail App Update 2.3.5 Blocks 3rd Party Tools

The latest update v2.3.5 to the Gmail application from Google, according to software engineer Chris Banes, blocks third party apps from using it’s DB (ContentResolver), which means all the apps, widgets and everything else that used to fetch information from your Gmail account inbox are now restricted to do so.

Many of you probably didnt notice this, I for example didnt notice it until today, though i was a little intrigued why Elixir doesnt update the Gmail notifier icon to display how many emails I’ve recieve, i thought it was because of its own update which happens with many apps on the Android market after a new update.

The problem is to do with it’s manifest:

<permission android:label="@string/read_perm_label" android:name="com.google.android.gm.permission.READ_GMAIL" android:protectionLevel="signature" android:permissionGroup="android.permission-group.MESSAGES" android:description="@string/read_perm_desc" />
<permission android:label="@string/write_perm_label" android:name="com.google.android.gm.permission.WRITE_GMAIL" android:protectionLevel="signature" android:permissionGroup="android.permission-group.MESSAGES" android:description="@string/write_perm_desc" />

This update already raised a lot of controversial among Gmail registrants which read emails through an Android device.
