Sony Ericsson has been taking quite a large chunk of Android Cellphone Market with its Xperia series and rightly so.
Now there had been rumours that there is a PSP phone in the making and yes these rumours are true, infact Sony has already released the All new Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Here is a quick review of the same.
OS and UI
Xperia Play runs on heavily modified version of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) themed with the trademark Timescape/Mediascape UI. As with previous phones, there are no complaints in this sector. The launcher is awesome, the scrolling is plush, there is no sign of lag what so ever. But just as you turn on the Cell you will notice that the brightness is mediocre at its best. Its very-very dim that if you take out the phone even in an vehicle with open windows you won’t be able to play any games at all. Now thats a Bummer is it not.
When closed it looks like any other Xperia but when you slide it open it turns into a full-fledged PSP GO. Yes there is a proper slide-out Gamepad for the gamers to enjoy. As for the experience with the gamepad, the Play acquits itself very well. The digital directional keys are firm with a satisfying amount of travel and the same goes for the face buttons. Squeezed in between them, Sony Ericsson also throws in a pair of analog pads, which react to your input in much the same fashion as the capacitive touchscreen does — with the big difference being that while you use the pads you’re not obscuring any of the action on screen. Each pad has a handy indented dot at its center, helping to orient your thumb without the need to look down. There is a traditional set of four Android buttons below the 4 inches Capacitive Touchscreen wit a resolution of 480*854 which could have been a bit higher for our liking. The screen supports multi-touch and pinch to zoom as well.
The Play runs on a 1GHZ Scorpion Processor with a Adreno 205 GPU and a Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon Chipset. At the price set for it by sony we would have liked a dual-core processor with a stronger GPU as well.
At 450 Euros the Xperia Play disappoints with its processor and GPU but certainly has a lot of Pros as well like some excellant Games, stunning looks and the name of Sony, but still there are way better options at the same price range like the newly released LG Optimus 2X,which has a dual-core Nvidia Tegra and give the Xperia play a run for its money.
