Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emailed her company’s employees today, with some not so good news and an interesting development regarding Nokia X Android phone experiment. The sad news is that 18,000 staff will be laid off with 12,500 of those staff being former Nokia staff who joined after Microsoft’s acquisition of the veteran phone company.
Another interesting development is that Nokia’s X project will be getting the axe too after launching in February of this year. Satya also had this to say about the development; “We plan to shift select Nokia X product designs to become Lumia products running Windows, This builds on our success in the affordable smartphone space and aligns with our focus on Windows Universal apps .”
Lots of commentators could see this coming from a long way away, it’s hard to envision a range of Android phones fitting into Microsoft’s portfolio and wider marketing strategy. Even when Nokia initially launched the line it struggled to muster much interest from consumers or from the industry at large.
It’s not all doom and gloom for owners of the Nokia X though, as Microsoft’s CEO has made comments suggesting that the device and others like it could be converted to Lumia phones.
Do you have a Nokia X? if so, how do you feel about this development, let us know in the comments and on twitter.
