Cortex-A17 (28nm) processor announced by ARM
By now pretty much everyone got a taste of the frustrating lag that low and mid-range smartphones and tablets face every time you try to throw at them a task that’s a little bit harder to process, while sometimes it just lags out of nowhere even on the homescreen or in the app drawer.
ARM plans to sweeten up this problem with the latest Cortex-A17 processors based on the big.LITTLE architecture that Samsung uses in its octa-core Exynos chips, which promises up to 60% boost in performance in comparison to Cortex-A9 models.
The new ARM Cortex-A19 is also accompanied by a Mali-T720 GPU that offers support for OpenGL ES 3.0 and with the recent optimization of the Android 4.4 operating system to run on budget-friendly devices with only 512MB this new CPU sounds like a promising piece of hardware.
However we wont be seeing it anytime soon as it wont be available until 2015, when ARM is expecting it to hit hard the smartphone and tablet industry.
