Archos, the French technology company, have announced they will release a successor to their current Gen10 devices in the Gen11, headlined by the Archos 101 XS 2. The new 10.1 inch tablet will launch in December in the UK at a price of £249.99 ($402.68/€298.11).
The Archos 101 XS 2 isn’t simply an updated version of it’s predecessor; it blows it completely out of the water. The new device sports a Quad core processor clocked at 1.6GHz with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. It has a Micro SD slot that can support SD cards up to 64GB for a massive amount of storage.
The 10.1″ screen is an HD IPS 1280×800 resolution. It’s capable of playing full 1080p HD videos and will completely immerse you in your chosen media with two forward facing speakers.
The Archos 101 XS 2 retains the popular coverboard, launched with it’s predecessor, which secures magnetically to the tablet. Once separated, the coverboard can be flipped over, where you’ll find an integrated dock and keyboard. Simply pull out the kickstand, dock the tablet (lead by further magnets to ensure a perfect dock each time) and type away. The tablet powers the keyboard, which has integrated Android specific keys, or you can plug in the keyboard, via it’s Micro USB port, and charge the tablet.
You can see the kick stand in the top right of the coverboard. This turns the it into a dock with attached keyboard[/caption]
Supplied with all the usual connections – dual band WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. 3.5mm audio jack and microphone – the Archos 101 XS 2 also has both forward and backward facing cameras (both sadly only 2MP resolution), and a Mini HDMI output to stream content to a larger screen. All this impressive hardware is packed into a shell only 10mm thick (15mm with the coverboard attached) and 273mm long and 169mm tall. The entire unit weighs in at 636g (1.4lbs) or 836g (1.8lbs) with the coverboard
Not only is Archos 101 XS 2 impressive in it’s hardware, but it also runs Android Jelly Bean 4.2. It’s a shame that it doesn’t run Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, seeing as KitKat precedes it by a month, but with the powerhouse inside it’s thin shell, it’s certainly future proof for several years to come.
Archos 101 XS 2 designed for work and play:
This tablet is clearly a great contender for games, with oodles or RAM, it’s Quad-core A9 processor (similar to those in Apple products) is teamed with a GPU which uses the same Quad-Core to power a Mali 400 graphics chip.
Archos haven’t stopped there, however. With a fully functioning QWERTY keyboard, the Archos 101 XS 2 also lends itself to writing and other office work. With this in mind, the Archos 101 XS 2 comes loaded with OfficeSuit Pro 6 (usually £9.65 in the play store, version 7 currently on sale till November 18 at £4.83) which allows you to open, edit and write MS Word, Excell, Powerpoint and PDF files. This will lend itself perfectly at the busy student or work executive.
I for one can’t wait to see this tablet in the flesh and will definitely put it on my Christmas Wishlist.
