Rumors & speculation are finally over, Sony officially announced its next flagship device today at CES 2013, the Xperia Z. A fully fledged Xperia device which closely follows  the path of the Xperia T. Built for multimedia purposes, couple with the latest quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC and enjoying a gigantic 2GB of RAM under the hood along with exclusive Sony features!

The Xperia Z and ZL are 5-inch smartphones with displays having 443 pixels per inch with virtually no bezel at all. Both devices feature a standard built-in storage of 16GB with micro SD card slots and run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Sony’s custom ‘Experience Flow UI’. Both sport 13MP cameras with Sony’s new Exmor RS image sensor, which is not only built for low-light, but it’s the first chip that can shoot 1080p HDR video. All drool-worthy specs. NFC comes into play and connectivity includes LTE and HSPA+, depending on local market, along with WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 & MHL-HDMI, aGPS/GPS/GLONASS.

An interesting new feature is the ability to tap the phone on the remote control of one of several new televisions that Sony is also announcing at CES. Once the phone and remote control meet, video can be sent from the phone through NFC to the remote and then over WiFi to the television for viewing on a big screen.

Under the hood we find a 1.5GHz APQ8064 SoC and a 2,330 mAh non-removable battery good for up to 14hrs of UMTS talktime or up to 510hrs of LTE standby . The key difference between both is that the Xperia ZL is slighly thicker but is a bit smaller although the display and specs remains the same, other than that the Xperia Z is fully is dust and water resistance (IP55 and IP57 ratings). The only downside is that both still run Android 4.1 when the latest version of Android is already in the wild but it shall come to no surprise that Sony is already prepping an Android 4.2.1 upgrade.
