LG Mobile announces 5″ Optimus VU LTE 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 8MP camera & Gingerbread

Exactly two weeks ago an LG device nicknamed Sketch showed up in a real-life shot and everyone was amazed by its large screen and the mystery surrounding it. The following day LG Mobile was teasing the same handset in a short video, but under a different name — Optimus VU.

The leaks didn’t stop there, three days after the teaser got out, VU smiled again on blurrycam in a comparison photo with the Galaxy Note.

Finally half an hour ago LG Mobile Korea posted a press release in which the vendor officially announces the extra-large 5-inch handset. As expected VU will be shown off at Mobile World Congress.

The ultra-thin LG Optimus VU at its 8.5mm thick, weighs in at 168 grams the phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS and it has the following features: a 5-inch IPS touchscreen (1024 x 768p resolution) and 4:3 aspect ratio and 650 nits brightness display which makes the screen more visible under direct sunlight, a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor, an 8MP rear-facing camera A/F LED, 1.3MP in front, 4G LTE, WiFi Direct & HDMI connectivity, DLNA, T-DMB support and 2080mAh battery.

Optimus VU will launch at the beginning of next month (March) through SK Telecom, although it runs Gingerbread out of the box LG says that a software upgrade will be available in the following three months after release. Pricing details are not mentioned in the press release.
